During the fall/winter/spring, a plethora of fishing opportunities exists in the Great Lakes. While alewives have been predominantly the preferred forage base that trout and salmon consume during the summer season, the opposite occurs during the winter as water temperatures drop and fall turnover completes its process. Several published studies have determined that Great Lakes brown trout, lake trout, and steelhead have alternatively focused their foraging preferences towards round gobies and gizzard shad. Native gizzard also make up an important food component to the list of multiple predator-prey interactions to Great Lakes predatory fish. A 26-page peer reviewed paper entitled Systematics and Biology of the Gizzard Shad completely covers life history, coloration, morphology, length distribution, and other parts of their life history. In Great Lakes harbors and river mouths, gizzard shad average in the 3 to 7 inch range with larger specimens achieving lengths up to 16 inches. To captalize of this important foragefish item, Musky Mike Flies produced a larger 7-inch Gamechanger Finneaus model (the larger brother to its 6-inch model) that is designed for targeting some of the largest brown trout and lake trout in the Great Lakes. While small baits have their place in time, larger baits will continue to produce the largest fish. Similar construction to the 6-inch model, this model has 6 regions/5 articulations. Each region of the multi-articulated hair jig progressively increases with length and volume of bucktail. Upper back contains medium grey and light blue bucktail whereas underbelly is white. The final 28mm Big Game Waddington shank is articulated to the 1/2 ounce swimbait head with 50-pound braid to allow for maximum movement and maximum security. Topping contains blue-pearl rainbow Polarflash. Additonal realism completed with 2 sets of fins - pelic and pectoral. Tail section contains hen saddle grizzly feathers tied 360 with a #2 Gamakatsu octopus stinger hook. Other details include 10mm Earth eyes with 2 coats of resin, blue-pearl segmented Lateral Scale Flash, and custom painted white-glitter jighead. This newly released 7-inch Gamechanger Gizzard Shad hairjig is the first of its kind and will be one of the ultimate deadly weapons in any ones aresenal. Expect multiple 25 to 30-plus pounders to be landed on this supersized gizzard shad pattern.
