Articulated Alaskan Saltwater BTD Jig - Greenback Herring
Greenback herring is an important color scheme developed by Musky Mike Flies that works well in both freshwater and marine fisheries. Given that water is 800 times more dense than air, saltwater is therefore more viscous and heavier than air. Similar with freshwater, the chemistry and salinity of saltwater affects the light penetration potential of certain colors of wavelength of light Darker hues of forest and kelly green produce more brightness and tone in the pelagic and benthic zones. Studies show that blue and green wavelengths of light penetrate the deepest depths into the water column compared to other colors on the light spectrum. Although there are no "greenback herring" in the coastal and marine waters of Alaska, the greenback herring scheme was also added to the Articulated Alaskan Saltwater BTD Jig. Like its brother, this model is a deadly weapon for halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. Similar in material construction to its brotherly pattern the blueback herring, the greenback herring model features a custom dyed kelly green grizzly schlappen tail accented with two strands of holographic green Saltwater Flashabou. The schlappen tail is connected to the main saltwater jighook shank with 100-pound braid via 240 grain gel-spun thread, thus formulating the perfect articulation. Articulation is also situated with 6 mm pearl beads to allow for the ideal-sized joint to allow for maximum movement potential. On the main jighook shank, the upperback consists of sparse tie-ins of chartruese followed by mixed blend of darker forest green and black bucktail hair. Underbelly is white bucktail. A pair of hen saddle forest green grizzly feathers are tied on each side to represent or simulate the operculum or gill flap region. Lateral line features 3 strands of holographic forest green Saltwater Flashabou. Eyes are 15 mm Flymen Fish Company Eyes in color "Earth". The topping of the articulated hair jig patterns features kelly green flashabou and peacock herl to repesent the darker coloration characteristic associated with the herrings (Clupea). Length of the fly varies from 10 to 12 inches dependent on the size of the jighead because heavier jig heads physically feature longer jighook shanks.
