Gizzard Shad
Gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) are one of the most dominant and signicant species of baitfishes nationwide that have been well known for creating trophy fisheries. Ranging in length from 4 to 16 inches, gizzard shad feature either one of two mixed combinations of coloration for the upper back: (1) grey with black or (2) grey with light blue. The underbelly is white. Strands of pearl lateral scale flashabou represent the lateral line combined with blue holographic Sparkle Flash for a topping on the upperback. Dyed grizzly hen saddle feather is used to simulate the operculum or gill flap region of the gizzard shad. Compared to other foragefishes, gizzard shad feature a reduced lateral line system, thus resulting in reduction of their mechanical sensory system.
